Position description:
USC Upstate Visual Arts, in the Department of Fine Arts and Communication Studies, invites qualified individuals to apply for a nine-month tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Art Studio and Foundations Coordinator beginning January 1, 2018 or August 16, 2018 on the Spartanburg and/or Greenville campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate evidence of a vibrant studio practice with substantial teaching experience. The candidate will show an awareness of critical issues facing art foundations programs and the ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and interacting with all art students in critiques and extra-curricular departmental activities. Duties include collegial leadership and collaboration with faculty and administrators to implement the mission of the visual arts programs, assist with course scheduling, assist in the process of the recruitment, training and management of adjunct foundation faculty, student advising and committee service. The coordinator will teach a combination of three foundation courses per semester. USC Upstate is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. A successful candidate will effectively contribute to continued accreditation efforts.

Minimum qualifications:
MFA or terminal degree in studio with emphasis in drawing or design must be earned prior to hire. ABD candidates with planned completion dates by December 31, 2017 for a January 1, 2018 hire or by August 15, 2018 for an August 16, 2018 hire may also be considered. The candidate must have a strong commitment to foundations instruction with a record of scholarly/creative research; the ability to teach foundation and upper level drawing courses, life drawing, 2-D design, composition and color theory, and experience in foundations digital design; a broad understanding of contemporary and traditional art theory and practice related to drawing and design; and a strong organizational and leadership skills for program development and management. Successful background is required.

Preferred qualifications:
Searching for a well-rounded faculty member capable of teaching in multiple areas of the Foundation program. Preference will be given to candidates showing evidence of exceptional teaching, ability to engage in the theoretical and critical discourses of contemporary art in practice and pedagogy, as well as a distinct and progressive vision for foundations curriculum development.
